Welcome to the Horseback Archery Journal

The Horseback Archery Journal is a collection of insights, stories and conversations from the world of Horseback Archery, written by international coach and competitor, Emily Massey. Here you'll find training ideas, informational posts, competition reflections, and discussions with riders and coaches from across the sport.

Hi, I'm Emily,

And welcome to the Horseback Archery Journal!

I'm one of the UK's only full time Horseback Archery coaches, and I work with riders of all levels, from picking up a bow for the first time, through to competing at National & International level. I also enjoy competing myself, which means I'm constantly learning, not just as a coach, but as an athlete too!

Over the 10 years that I've been involved in this sport, one thing has become very clear to me - the majority of the knowledge, wisdom and experience lives in the conversations had between coaches, athletes and others, but so little of it is ever written down. This journal is my attempt to change that.

In this journal I’ll be sharing:

Coach’s Notebook – practical insights, tips, tricks and training ideas for all levels of athlete.

Competition Diaries – stories, reflections and lessons learned from events I’m attending.

Across the Track – conversations with athletes, coaches and officials on a whole wide range of topics.

Whether you’re just starting out, or aiming for International level competition, I hope you’ll find that the content of this journal helps you to improve, think differently, or feel more connected to the sport! I’ve got so much that I’m looking forward to sharing, both from my own experience, and from the incredible athletes and coaches who I’ve been lucky enough to train with, so please do follow along on my journey!
